Art Deco and Art Nouveau are two distinctive and influential art and design movements from different periods, each with unique characteristics, themes, and visual styles. This year the plan is to design and explore the differences we start with some Art Deco designs. Here is a run down of the two styles.

1. Art Nouveau (1890s – 1910s)

Overview:
Art Nouveau, meaning “New Art” in French, emerged in the late 19th century and flourished until the early 20th century. It was a reaction to academic art and a celebration of organic, flowing lines inspired by nature.

Key Characteristics:

  • Organic and Curvilinear Forms: Inspired by natural elements like flowers, vines, and flowing water.
  • Whiplash Curves: Long, sinuous lines often resembling tendrils or vines.
  • Floral and Plant Motifs: Used extensively in decorative arts, architecture, and graphic design.
  • Elaborate Ornamentation: Highly decorative and intricate.
  • Influence of Nature and Fantasy: Animals, insects, and mythical creatures.

Famous Art Nouveau Artists and Designers:

  • Alphonse Mucha: Known for his posters and illustrations.
  • Gustav Klimt: His paintings blend symbolism with Art Nouveau style.
  • Hector Guimard: Architect famous for Paris Métro station entrances.

Examples of Art Nouveau Works:

  • Paris Métro signs designed by Hector Guimard.
  • Posters by Alphonse Mucha featuring flowing-haired women surrounded by floral motifs.

2. Art Deco (1920s – 1940s)

Overview:
Art Deco emerged in the 1920s and reached its peak in the 1930s. It is characterized by a fascination with modernity, luxury, and technological progress, often integrating geometric forms and bold lines.

Key Characteristics:

  • Geometric Shapes: Zigzags, chevrons, sunbursts, and stepped patterns.
  • Symmetry and Streamlined Forms: Balanced compositions and sleek, aerodynamic designs.
  • Luxurious Materials: Use of glass, chrome, polished wood, and precious metals.
  • Machine-Inspired Aesthetics: Celebrating industrialization and the modern machine age.
  • Bold, Contrasting Colors: Vibrant and sometimes metallic hues.

Famous Art Deco Artists and Designers:

  • Tamara de Lempicka: Painter known for sleek, glamorous portraits.
  • René Lalique: Created exquisite Art Deco glassworks.
  • William Van Alen: Architect of the Chrysler Building in New York City.

Examples of Art Deco Works:

  • The Chrysler Building in New York City, with its iconic stepped crown.
  • The geometric patterning on decorative objects like clocks, jewelry, and furniture.

Why Lighting and Chandelier design, London, UK?

I didn’t just get up one day and decide to design chandeliers and lamps and lighting. My degree in product design and a foundation before that helped steer me towards this path. But just designing things was not enough. Actually building them is a passion to.

From a young age I wanted to design and draw things. I grew up in London surrounded by different cultures and amazing art and design. While at college I developed a passion for 3d modelling and Computer Graphic Images (CGI). I became obsessed with light and shadow.

As 3d software got better I found myself making interesting shapes with light and refraction. My passion for video camera work and photography made me play with new light technologies. I started to experiment with transparent plastics, defuse plastics and how they behaved with light to better understand what I wanted to achieve. The answer was better light and shadows.

After training with a blacksmith, a metal fabricator, a mechanic and working in interior design as a works drawings specialist my way ahead as a lighting designer started to form and take shape.
